The Vital Role of Fascia in Your Body
Aug 01, 2024Fascia, the connective tissue in your body, plays several crucial roles. Let’s highlight some of the main functions of this incredible tissue.
Fascia acts like a spider web, holding everything in place and connecting all parts of your body. Without fascia, you’d essentially be a pile of skin and bones on the floor.
Beyond connecting everything, fascia also transfers energy throughout your body and initiates movement. It was once believed that the brain sent nerve signals directly to the muscles to trigger movement. However, it's now understood that the brain actually sends signals to the nerve cells within the fascia. This tissue then moves and transmits energy to surrounding muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones, initiating movement.
Fascia is rich in diverse nerve cells, making it the most sensitive sensory organ in your body—more sensitive than your skin or eyes. These nerve cells are responsible for spatial awareness, emotions and feelings, movement, and even pain.
Comprising 70% collagen, fascia is essential for maintaining the structure, integrity, and movement of your body. Collagen acts like a coiled spring, helping transfer the energy of movement to other tissues.
Additionally, fascia stores 70% of the water in your body. This water binds to hyaluronan (hyaluronic acid) within the fascia, forming a gel-like substance that flows through your body like a river, carrying hydration and nutrients.
It's clear that fascia is incredibly important, playing multiple roles in maintaining your body’s structure, movement, and overall function.
Having healthy, functioning fascia is imperative in overall health and wellness.
